Period 7 Basketball

Due Date: Wednesday, April 25th

ZONE DEFENSE

The Basic 2 – 1 – 2 Zone Defense (box with a man in the middle)

It is one of the most commonly used zone defenses – especially when a team has smallish forwards and one very large person – who covers the middle.

The reason this defense (or variations of it) is used is because it has several strengths. These strengths include:

• Strong in the rebounding triangle
• Excellent underneath in preventing low post moves
• The strong rebounding presence allows for one player to immediately break down the court for the fast break.

This basketball defense is a little vulnerable against baseline jumpers, and if the ball is shifted down low, this opens up the top of the key. Appropriately executed, this zone defense can cause your opponents a great deal of headaches.

1 and 2 man

If you have two tenacious defensive guards, this might be the defense for you. Working together, these two players are responsible for protecting the perimeter from long distance shots. If they are caught out too far without help from the 5 man, they can make the defense vulnerable to the center lane pass.

These basketball players need to be quick in order to cover the large area around half of the perimeter. They also need to be able to make the burst long distance for the fast break.

3 and 4 man

The 3 and 4 men in this defense differ from many of the other zone defenses. You need very strong rebounders at this position, and they also have to be able to move well around the floor. They too have a lot of area to cover, and they need to provide assistance to the 5 man when he or she is outnumbered.

Strong players at these positions are crucial to the success of this defense.

5 man

This is a position that requires the tallest player with the widest wingspan on the team. They are your primary defender and rebounder when the ball goes down low. The best way to describe the action of the 5 man is a circular motion that follows the direction of the pass.
This defense look like the number five on dice, with the 5 man in the middle. One of the first lessons that you can teach your players with this defense is that you need to help one another in order to be successful. Aside from calling out screens and players cutting through the key, your players should be collapsing in the driving lanes to create a mini trap for any player trying to drive the ball to the hoop.

Here are a few of the responsibilities of each player:

• The 1 and 2 man need to protect the perimeter. They are the first line of defense in this zone, and once they are beaten it leave the triangle of remaining players one their own. Tough, aggressive defense up top is crucial.
• The 3 and 4 man have to be ready to crash the boards hard. There are going to be a lot of medium to long-range shots resulting from this defense and the rebounds will be plenty.
• The 5 man needs to make sure nothing goes through the middle without being checked. If something gets by them, then it is usually an easy two points. This player needs to have his or her head on a swivel to keep on top of the action.
Here’s how this defense works:

• The 1 man pressures the ball carrier and follows them anywhere around the perimeter (on their half of the court). Once the ball has been passed they follow the pass until it goes down to the lower perimeter area. After that, the 1 man either retreats back close to the foul line, or waits to intercept a pass back around the perimeter.
• The 2 man covers the pass back to the top of the court, but then they follow the first pass, shadowing the one man. Once it goes down to the low perimeter, they drop back to the middle of the circle at the foul line.
• The 3 man (in this set up) simply protects the backside of the defense. They need to be very aware of cross-court passes that can leave the defense vulnerable.
• The 4 man meets the 1 man halfway up the key, but not too far to leave a low post person wide open underneath the hoop, or on the perimeter alone. They then shift down to the baseline to cover the shot or the drive, with help from the 5 man.
• The 5 man, as I mentioned earlier, looks like they float around in a circle. They will follow the ball and be the back up man should anyone try to cut across the middle. The need to be ready to pounce on rebounds and make outlet passes for the fast break.

The final thing this defense needs to be careful of is the cross-court pass. If a team goes from one side of the baseline to another, your defense could be stretched. Unless they can recover quickly, it could pose a problem.

Which position (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) do you you think you should play and who on your team should play the other positions? Please make sure you assign each player on your team a position. Do you think this will be an effective defense for your team? Why?

For your team, Asher and I should play 1 and 2 man because we are very tenacious guards who are always active and with good blocking and stealing skills.
Keeyn and Cornelius should play 3 and 4 man because Keeyn is small so he often gets around and gets lot of balls after rebound. Also Cornelius has good jump to get rebound. Also they are good at covering large zones.
Finally, Alex should man 5 because he is the tallest. However, our team does not match with this defense because our team is a very fast moving team and should be able to quickly change from defense to offense and cover large area of the court quickly.

Jason-1
Kaitlyn-2
Me-3
Eric/Alec-4
James/Hersh-5
I don't think this is an effective defense for our team because we don't have very tall players and enough good rebounders, we have more short, fast players

i should play 5, albert should play 1, caleb should play 4, richard should play 3,and malia should play 2. this would be a useful defense because all our players can play the positions very well. therefore it would work to our advantage.

I should play 1, Sunny, Sam, and Mona should play 2, Josh(or is his name Jordan? I don't remember) should play 4, and Kwame should play 5. I think this will be an effective defense for our team because because I am fast and can keep up with the other team's point guard, while Sunny, Sam, and Mona are quick enough to stay on the other guards. Also, Josh/Jordan and Kwame have a bigger build and are relatively tall so they can get rebounds easily.

Our 1 should be Alex Marks because he takes the ball alot.
2 should be me because I am more of an outside shooter. 3 is Asher because he is always down in the paint to lay it up or shoot it in. our 4 is Yung Sung because hes defense is sharp and always trying his hardest to get the turnover. 5 is kia because he really doesnt do much and so he basically stands in the middle center.

I think either sunny or sam should play the one, i should play the two, jordy should play the three, Chris should play the four, and Kwame should play the five. I think this will be an effective defense for our team because the best rebounders are down low, and the one two and three player are able to get down the court the fastest.

I should play center, Albert should also switch around center with me, pop should play guard, richard should play small foward, and micheal should play power foward. - Caleb Zweig

I think I should play the 1 man and Jerry the 2 man because me and Jerry are the quicker ones on the team and can cover the three point line better. Jack should be the 5 because he is the tallest. Naveen, Ben, and Ming could change between the 3 and 4 men because they are big and good at getting rebounds. This could be an effective defense because we have the people who fit the job just right.

I should play the 4 because im one of the tallest players of my team, however im quick for steals. Micheal is 5 for his great rebounding. Richard is 1 for his passing and can run the floor, Tommy is 2 as a top of the key defender. Caleb is 3 for quickness and size.

I think in our zone defense Sunny or Sam should play the 1 because they are fast getting down the court. I(Mona) should play the 2 because I can get down the court fast and I am not one of the taller players. I think Jordy should play the 3 because he can both get down the court fast and rebound well. Chris should play the 4 because he's a great rebounder because he can jump really high and he is fast. Lastly, I think Kwame should play the 5 because he is the tallest on the team and has long enough arms to grab the ball before the other team does. This will be an effective defense for our team baecause our whole team has different talents to add to make our team complete.

I feel James would play the middle because he is the most athletic, Eric and Alec down low because they are athletic and good rebounders, and me and raz should play up top because we are athletic and good rebounders.

I should play the 1 or 2, same with richard, malia, and papa, albert she play in the middle because hes tall and has wide arms, and michael and caleb should both be down low at the 3 and 4 because they are good rebounders. This defense should work well because we have players who fit each position.

1- Alex because he takes a lot of shots on the perimeter
2- Cornelius because he usually stay on the outside and takes 3-pointers
3- Asher because hes ready to take layups when 5 is out numbered
4- Yung Sung because he usually gets a lot of rebounds and is a great defensive player
5- Me because i usually just stay in the middle and make sure no one makes any easy layups

I should be the 3, sam or sonny to be the 1, mona 2, chris the 4 and kwame 5. This is effective because we have the strongest down low for the rebounds who can then pass it up court for a fast break to are quicker players.

1/2- Sergio and I can both play defense pretty well
3/4- Ben, Ming, Nevine
5- Jack or Nevine
I still believe that 2-3 zone is best against every team except Alex Marks because he carries his team so we go 3-2 against him. Jack makes a good center so against every other team we should be fine.
-Jerry Mi

i should play the one because of ball handles and court vision, tommy should play the 2 because of his good perimeter shot, chris the 3, for he is big and athletic. lastly caleb at the 4 because he is big and agile at the same time. albert at the 5 because he is the biggest one on the court most of the times and thats usually who the center is. our main zone defense should be a 2-3 having me and tommy up top for quickness and the rest down low for size.

i (sunny) should play 4, kwame plays middle because he is the talles, jordy and chris should play 3, mona and sam can play 2. This is effective cause it suits each players specific skill.

Jack could play 5
I could play 3
sergio could play 2
naveen or ben could play 4
jerry could play 1

this wouldnt work because we're a small team other than jack.

I (Sam) should play the four
Xavier should play the three
Jose should play the five
Ethan should play the one
David should play the two

I think this defense can work for us because we have Jose who is really tall for the rebounds, Xavier and me for the rebound backup and corner players, and Ethan and David, who are quick on their feet, can cover the perimeter and long range 2's area.

I think i should play 1-5 because i think i am able to guard the ball as well as defend the paint.
2 should be corn because he is very quick and can play solid defense and he can shoot from the outside. 3 is Asher because he has good size and the quckness to have an impact on smaller or quicker players so he creates a good matchup for us.our 4 is Yung Sung because he is going hard on defense all the time. are 5 could be kia cause he can just clog up the paint
-Alex Marks

I think Richard should play the 1 because hes the best ball-handler on the team, i should play the 2 because I am also a solid ball-handler and I am fast, Caleb should play the 3 because hes a stron rebounder and he can cover a lot of ground, Michael should play the 4 because he is athletic and can jump up for rebounds, and Albert should play the 5 because he has the greatest wing span on the team by far.

I think I should be down at the bottom because I have the height to rebound . Richard should be on the top and chris should be on top to . Micheal will be on the box down low . Alex will be in the middle because his height . I think my team should be in a 2-3 zone .

I feel that james should play hte 5 because he the most athletic, Eric and Alec should play the 3 and the 4 because they are good rebounders, and me and raz should play the 1 and 2 because we have good hands and are quick

I believe David should play the 1, Xavier should play the 2, I should play the 3, Sam should play the 4, and Jose should play the 5. We could play a 2-3 because we dont have much size, so if someone drives, our only chance is to collapse onto them.

I should be playing the 5 because I'm the tallest, can block shots, and get defensive rebounds. Xavier should play the 1 and 2 and the other two play the 3 or 4.
