Period 3 Advanced Basketball

Due Date: Wednesday, April 25th

ZONE DEFENSE

The Basic 2 – 1 – 2 Zone Defense (box with a man in the middle)

It is one of the most commonly used zone defenses – especially when a team has smallish forwards and one very large person – who covers the middle.

The reason this defense (or variations of it) is used is because it has several strengths. These strengths include:

• Strong in the rebounding triangle
• Excellent underneath in preventing low post moves
• The strong rebounding presence allows for one player to immediately break down the court for the fast break.

This basketball defense is a little vulnerable against baseline jumpers, and if the ball is shifted down low, this opens up the top of the key. Appropriately executed, this zone defense can cause your opponents a great deal of headaches.

1 and 2 man

If you have two tenacious defensive guards, this might be the defense for you. Working together, these two players are responsible for protecting the perimeter from long distance shots. If they are caught out too far without help from the 5 man, they can make the defense vulnerable to the center lane pass.

These basketball players need to be quick in order to cover the large area around half of the perimeter. They also need to be able to make the burst long distance for the fast break.

3 and 4 man

The 3 and 4 men in this defense differ from many of the other zone defenses. You need very strong rebounders at this position, and they also have to be able to move well around the floor. They too have a lot of area to cover, and they need to provide assistance to the 5 man when he or she is outnumbered.

Strong players at these positions are crucial to the success of this defense.

5 man

This is a position that requires the tallest player with the widest wingspan on the team. They are your primary defender and rebounder when the ball goes down low. The best way to describe the action of the 5 man is a circular motion that follows the direction of the pass.
This defense look like the number five on dice, with the 5 man in the middle. One of the first lessons that you can teach your players with this defense is that you need to help one another in order to be successful. Aside from calling out screens and players cutting through the key, your players should be collapsing in the driving lanes to create a mini trap for any player trying to drive the ball to the hoop.

Here are a few of the responsibilities of each player:

• The 1 and 2 man need to protect the perimeter. They are the first line of defense in this zone, and once they are beaten it leave the triangle of remaining players one their own. Tough, aggressive defense up top is crucial.
• The 3 and 4 man have to be ready to crash the boards hard. There are going to be a lot of medium to long-range shots resulting from this defense and the rebounds will be plenty.
• The 5 man needs to make sure nothing goes through the middle without being checked. If something gets by them, then it is usually an easy two points. This player needs to have his or her head on a swivel to keep on top of the action.
Here’s how this defense works:

• The 1 man pressures the ball carrier and follows them anywhere around the perimeter (on their half of the court). Once the ball has been passed they follow the pass until it goes down to the lower perimeter area. After that, the 1 man either retreats back close to the foul line, or waits to intercept a pass back around the perimeter.
• The 2 man covers the pass back to the top of the court, but then they follow the first pass, shadowing the one man. Once it goes down to the low perimeter, they drop back to the middle of the circle at the foul line.
• The 3 man (in this set up) simply protects the backside of the defense. They need to be very aware of cross-court passes that can leave the defense vulnerable.
• The 4 man meets the 1 man halfway up the key, but not too far to leave a low post person wide open underneath the hoop, or on the perimeter alone. They then shift down to the baseline to cover the shot or the drive, with help from the 5 man.
• The 5 man, as I mentioned earlier, looks like they float around in a circle. They will follow the ball and be the back up man should anyone try to cut across the middle. The need to be ready to pounce on rebounds and make outlet passes for the fast break.

The final thing this defense needs to be careful of is the cross-court pass. If a team goes from one side of the baseline to another, your defense could be stretched. Unless they can recover quickly, it could pose a problem.

Which position (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) do you you think you should play and who on your team should play the other positions? Please make sure you assign each player on your team a position. Do you think this will be an effective defense for your team? Why?

1 and 2 man= Me and Danny.
3 and 4 man= Alec and Clement
5 man= Willis

I think this would be an effective defense for us because the defense ensures good rebounding. This will lead to fast breaks and easy points.

I think I would be more of a 5th man player because I have speed and height. and i have quick reflexes and speed so if i steal the ball i will be aware of any available fast breaks. i think fred should be the 1st man because he is quick and has good defense. bianca should be the 2nd woman because since she is the shortest, she should be away from the post. but she also has good defense. liam should be the 3rd man because he has good defense and also knows how to run fast breaks. phillip should be the 5th man because he is tall and can stop any layups or post shots. i think this is an effective defense because we are putting our best players at their strongest position.

i think i should play the on position bc i have alot of energy in the morning and im ready to do it! im ready to fulfill this position and if my coach puts me in ill play. i think jason should play 2 bc he is also aggressive paul should play 3 bc he is sturdy with Pat bc they are taller and Alon should play 5 bc he is Alon. this defense would work but it would not be as effective as the 4-1 defense. if everyone plays their position well and we are tenacious this defense seems fit for are style of play.

Yes i do think this would be an effective defense for our team. We have 2 fast people up top and we have Filip in the middle who is a good big man. and we have me and drew you can guard the perimeter and guard the paint and get rebounds.

Kyle Weissenburger,

I should play the 5 on defense for my team. I am the tallest player on my team.. On offense however I play every position. Boom. Jonny Ma should play the 1, Austin Shin the 2, Arjun the 3, and Cameron the 4. If we ran a 2-3 zone I think it would be very effective and we could win by large margins.

We'd run a 2-3 with Sheri and Sam at the top Brandon and Dionte on the wings and me in the middle.

2. Sheri
3. Dionte
4. Brandon
5. Me

I should play the 1 on my team. Arjun would play the 2, Austin the 3, Cameron the 4, and Kyle the 5. We could play a 2-3 zone defense because we could easily cover the perimeter and also guard the paint and get rebounds well.

1 and 2: Myles, Jason, or me
3: Patrick
4: Phillip
5. Alon

This will be an effective set up because we have a lot of speed at the top and decent size down low with great athleticism. We'll be able to cover the entire court.\

the 1 and 2 men would be me (austin) and jonny
then the 3 and 4 men would be cameron and nicos then the 5th man would be kyle.

this would be effect because we have the quicker people in the front in order to stop the shooters and then the back for rebounding and people are bigger.

3- me
4- Fred
5- Drew

I think I should play the three because I could offer some help with rebounding. Also, Fred and I would be there if drew needed any help covering someone down low.

we could play a 2-1-2 since willis is tall and he would be able to cover the middle

I think I should play as 5 because i'm the tallest person in the team.
1 and 2- Pat and Paul.
3 and 4- Myles Jason and Alon.

miles and jason would be 1 and 2 because they are quick and are able to cover ground quickly. Paul and i would play 3 and 4 while we aren't too tall, we are able to box out and get rebounds. Alon would play 5 because of his height and skill in the post. I think this defense would work well. We would have to make sure we cover for each other if we are out of position.

1. Bianca because she is a good passer and she can also squeez in between defense

2. Me because I am good at fast breaks and i am also an adequate outaide shooter who can also pass to the 3rd man who'll be Varun

3. Varun because of his driving capabilities and ability to shoot off screen. He is also a good rebounder.

4. Philip because of his post up and rebounding skills. He hasn't quite mastered the art of passing yet, but he's worth ataying down there..." cleaning up"

5. Drew because of his defeainge skills and rebounding talent. He can also kick it out when triple teamed or quadrapo-teamed as we expect it to happen. He's a beast.

Man to man defensive has always worked for me and any team I'm in. We do not make switches unless totally necessary, that is, youvhase your man all the way till you cant chase him anymore and that's when you call a switch. A good ball player knows how to execute the man to man defensive pretty well...it calls for great bball IQ and instincts.

I think we could play the 2-3 zone because Sheri and Sam playing at the top can get out to the shooters in time to stop the shot and with Justin, Brandon, and Me down low we wont let up anything in the paint.

1. Fred
2. Liam/Bianca
3. Varun
4. Me(Filip)
5. Drew

Fred is very mobile with good ball control and knows how to run an offense, making him a perfect fit for the point guard position. Liam and Bianca are mid sized shooters, making them good SG's. Varun is also a good shooter but provides more height, making it necessary to put him a little closer to paint. Drew and I could swap between the 4 and 5 because of our rebounding and defensive ability.
Since Drew and I could take care of the paint with ease between just the two of us, a 3-2 defense would seem best fit for our team. This would provide for the best balance on defense.

On my team, Johnny would play the 1, I would play the 2, Austin the 3, Cameron the 4, and Kyle the 5. I think this defense will work well, but a 2-3 zone would be much more effective. Me and Johnny are quick and can guard the perimeter relatively well to prevent open 3's, and with 3 men down low, it will be very though for the other team to get an inside shot also.

3-Paul
4-Pat/Phillip
5-Alon

I think this setup would work because it would allow players to play to their strengths, for example me and myles can play high pressure defense and alon can protect the middle and get rebounds.

I am the small forward on my team, dani is the point guard, nikos is the shooting guard, clement is the power forward and Willis is the center because he is the tallest player. We run a 2-3 zone defense and we close out good on 3 point shooters.

Willis would play the 1 because he handles the ball best, Niko could play the 2, Alec at the 3, I would play the 4 because I can rebound and our team isn't very tall, and lastly Danny would play the 5. This defense would not work well for our team because we are mainly guards and guarding down low would be much more difficult for our team.
