Period 2 Basketball

Due Date: Wednesday, April 25th

ZONE DEFENSE

The Basic 2 – 1 – 2 Zone Defense (box with a man in the middle)

It is one of the most commonly used zone defenses – especially when a team has smallish forwards and one very large person – who covers the middle.

The reason this defense (or variations of it) is used is because it has several strengths. These strengths include:

• Strong in the rebounding triangle
• Excellent underneath in preventing low post moves
• The strong rebounding presence allows for one player to immediately break down the court for the fast break.

This basketball defense is a little vulnerable against baseline jumpers, and if the ball is shifted down low, this opens up the top of the key. Appropriately executed, this zone defense can cause your opponents a great deal of headaches.

1 and 2 man

If you have two tenacious defensive guards, this might be the defense for you. Working together, these two players are responsible for protecting the perimeter from long distance shots. If they are caught out too far without help from the 5 man, they can make the defense vulnerable to the center lane pass.

These basketball players need to be quick in order to cover the large area around half of the perimeter. They also need to be able to make the burst long distance for the fast break.

3 and 4 man

The 3 and 4 men in this defense differ from many of the other zone defenses. You need very strong rebounders at this position, and they also have to be able to move well around the floor. They too have a lot of area to cover, and they need to provide assistance to the 5 man when he or she is outnumbered.

Strong players at these positions are crucial to the success of this defense.

5 man

This is a position that requires the tallest player with the widest wingspan on the team. They are your primary defender and rebounder when the ball goes down low. The best way to describe the action of the 5 man is a circular motion that follows the direction of the pass.
This defense look like the number five on dice, with the 5 man in the middle. One of the first lessons that you can teach your players with this defense is that you need to help one another in order to be successful. Aside from calling out screens and players cutting through the key, your players should be collapsing in the driving lanes to create a mini trap for any player trying to drive the ball to the hoop.

Here are a few of the responsibilities of each player:

• The 1 and 2 man need to protect the perimeter. They are the first line of defense in this zone, and once they are beaten it leave the triangle of remaining players one their own. Tough, aggressive defense up top is crucial.
• The 3 and 4 man have to be ready to crash the boards hard. There are going to be a lot of medium to long-range shots resulting from this defense and the rebounds will be plenty.
• The 5 man needs to make sure nothing goes through the middle without being checked. If something gets by them, then it is usually an easy two points. This player needs to have his or her head on a swivel to keep on top of the action.
Here’s how this defense works:

• The 1 man pressures the ball carrier and follows them anywhere around the perimeter (on their half of the court). Once the ball has been passed they follow the pass until it goes down to the lower perimeter area. After that, the 1 man either retreats back close to the foul line, or waits to intercept a pass back around the perimeter.
• The 2 man covers the pass back to the top of the court, but then they follow the first pass, shadowing the one man. Once it goes down to the low perimeter, they drop back to the middle of the circle at the foul line.
• The 3 man (in this set up) simply protects the backside of the defense. They need to be very aware of cross-court passes that can leave the defense vulnerable.
• The 4 man meets the 1 man halfway up the key, but not too far to leave a low post person wide open underneath the hoop, or on the perimeter alone. They then shift down to the baseline to cover the shot or the drive, with help from the 5 man.
• The 5 man, as I mentioned earlier, looks like they float around in a circle. They will follow the ball and be the back up man should anyone try to cut across the middle. The need to be ready to pounce on rebounds and make outlet passes for the fast break.

The final thing this defense needs to be careful of is the cross-court pass. If a team goes from one side of the baseline to another, your defense could be stretched. Unless they can recover quickly, it could pose a problem.

Which position (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) do you you think you should play and who on your team should play the other positions? Please make sure you assign each player on your team a position. Do you think this will be an effective defense for your team? Why?

I think i will be aat the 1 because ii can handle the ball and a willing passer Jesse or grace the 2 because he shoots well, Taj although undersized plays somewhat of good defense and Austin as the 4 or 5 because he is the biggest kid on the floor mostly i thhink it will be an effecient defense because almost evry kid is perfect fpr their position.

The lineup that I would put is...

1.Brian because he is fast and can handle the ball
2.Calvin He has a pretty good shot and is a good defender
3.The girl on our team because she is a good shooter and is very aware on defense
4.Me because I am taller and can finish down low
5.Garth because he is good at rebounding and is our best defender

I would not use the zone defense because I think we match up well with the other teams.

I would play the 1 or 2 position, because i can dribble and play defense well. I think Philip and Me would make good 1 and 2s since we can shoot well, and Ben would be 4 or 5s since hes the best rebounder and big man. Jeremey would be 3, or 4, since hes kind of tall and quick. Not really a good defense, since we are a short team.

I would play the 5 because im a beast at the 5.. Andy would be the 1. Micheal at the 2. Parker at the 3 he's wet. Nathan at the 4. It would be a good defense because we have an athletic team.

I think that Ethan should play position 5 because of his hieght and overall skill, I should play position 4 to get rebounds and assist other players. Nathan should play 3 because he's big enough to make some good rebounds and can put the ball back up on offence. Finally Andy and Micheal should play 1 & 2 because they make some fast break aways.

Kevin Cartwright
I would be 2, Zayd 1,Leia 3, Thanos 4,and Brandon 5.
Even though Brandon Zayd or myself could all play the 1 spot this arrangement is the best if we were to play a 2-1-2 zone.

I think I would play either the 1 or the 2 because I like to shoot. Papa could play the 2 also because he handles the ball well. Jesse and Tej could be the 3. Austin could be at the 5.

i would put calvin at 1 because he is most willing to pass. Brian at 2 because he can score. ian at 3 cause he is a good shooter. Abraham is also a quality shooter so i would put him at the 4. finally garth at 5 cause he can rebound and play great dfense.

I think that calvin should play 1, i would play 2, garth at 3, and ian and bryan down low at 4 and 5. Bryan and Ian are both big and could rebound the ball well, while also being able to guard bigger people. Calvin is a natural point guard, and I would play 2 because I can shoot and also dribble. Garth is our best defender and playing 3 could let him guard small or big people

I think I should play 1 because i usually am the one pressuring the ball carrier. Dan or Dj should play 2 cause usually shoot, Philip and Jeremy on 3 and 4. Ben as 5 because hes our best player.

I think that i should play the 4 because i am a good defender and rebounder. I think philip would play the 3 because he has good length compared to the rest of our team. I would put jeremy at the 5 because he has the best combo of length and athleticism for our team. I would put angela and DJ at the 1 and 2 because angela usually pressures the ball well and i trust DJ on the fast break.

I don't think it matters which defensive position each of the members of our team play because we all pretty much have the same size and speed.

Noa Berlin
I think Calvin needs to play 1 because he tends to pressure whoever he’s defending, Brain should play 2 because he is fast and he can get rebounds easily, Noa should play 3 because I’m good at moving around and I’m aware of what’s going on, Ian should play 4 because he’s good at getting rebounds, and Garth should play 5 because he’s really good at guarding taller people. I’m not sure this will be an effective defense for my team because we stop the other team from scoring more when we play man to man.

I think that I would play 1 or 2. For the other people on my team I think that Grace would probably be the 1 or 2. Austin would be the 5. Tej and Papa would play 4 and 5, and Jesse would play probably the 1 or 2. I do think this would be an effective defense because we can have good rebounding down low with height.

I would play the 2 with DJ at 1. Ben and Angela at the 3 and 4. Jeremy at 5 cause he can make plays on the ball. Won't be very effective since our whole team is small.

I think I should play 1. Michael should play near me at 2 because he's fast and small with vicious small hands. 3 to Parker. 4 to Nathan because he's one of the more aggressive players, and Ethan on the 5 spot because he is tall and can drive after he gets a rebound

Micheal would be 1, since he's quick and can pressure the ball carrier when he tries. Andy should play two, because he's also quick and agressive. I would play 3, because I can back up anyone as well as stop the other team from getting easy shots. Nathan would be a 4 since he's tall and can get rebounds. Ethan should be 5 because he's the tallest and best player on the team.

I think i should play the 5 because i am one of the tallest/biggest kids on the court. I can cover the center pretty well. I think grace and papa can play either 1 or 2 they are the quickest and not the best rebounders. I think Tej will be effective at the 4 spot with jesse at the 3,

Austin Schoenfeld

I should be the 1 because I can handle the ball and Kevin should be the 2 because he is also a guard. Lia and Thanos should be the 3 and 4 because they are a bit bigger and they are forwards. Brandon hsould play the 5 because he is the biggest and gets the most rebounds. This defense will be good for our team because we are quick and lengthy

i shoulsd probably play 5 on our team cause im taller than everyone else. cecil could play 1, keenan 2, john 3 and somebody else 5. it wouldnt be great for our team cause we would be vulnerable to cross court passes
-matt schliep

I think Matt should play 5 because he is the tallest, and is the best rebounder. Cici, Julia, and I can be the 3/4 men, and Kevin/Keenan can be 1/2 men.

I could play in position 5 because I can help on getting the ball on defence. Keven 1, Zyad 2, Leia 3, Brandon 4.
