Period 1 Advanced Basketball

Due Date: Thursday, April 14th

In our 3 on 3 unit we have discussed several ways to create space on offense to get open. Please explain how to correctly use a pick and roll, a curl, or a fade to create space from the defender. How important do you think it is to be able to read the defense? Why?

In order to correctly use a pick and roll one person must set a pick on your defender. Then you must come tight off of his shoulder so your defender can't get through the pick easily. The, the guy setting the pick must roll to the basket and as you drive to the basket you have the choice of either passing, shooting or taking it all the way in for a layup. I think it is very important to be able to read defenses because then you know whether to dribble drive, pass or shoot effectively.

In a pick and roll the person sets a screen on the defender. The pick setter then cuts toward the basket. The ballhandler then has the chance to pass it toward the cutter. Reading the defense is important because you can prevent your opponent from executing plays on offense.

An effective pick and roll will at least get one player open usally the person setting the pick will roll to the basket while the person getting the pick will have a wide open shot or a open guy rolling to the basket
