In our 3 on 3 unit we have discussed several ways to create space on offense to get open. Please tell me your team name and explain how to correctly use a pick and roll, a curl, or a fade to create space from the defender. How important do you think it is to be able to read the defense? Why?

pick and roll- The screener screens an area and the person dribbling, dribbles the ball to make the defender go into the screen, then the screener rolls to the rim for and easy basket.
curl- the screener screens an area for the person trying to get open. The person trying to get open does a V-cut and makes sure his shoulder touches the sceener's shoulder and should get the ball and decide what to do next depending on the defense. You should complete the curl if the defender chases you around the screen.
fade- You do the same thing for a curl except if the defender goes above the screen, then you would fade back and received the ball in open space.
it is very important to read the defense because if the defender follows you around the screen and you fade back, he defender will be in the passing lane and get an easy steal.

the pick and roll is probably the easiest way to create space and get to the basket but when u do a pick and roll you have to pick the area and wait till your teammates touch your shoulder the you roll to the basket for the extra pass. The curl is the same as the roll basically.

Pick & Roll, we have an offensive player sets a screen for another offensive player who currently has the ball. This is also known as a ball screen.(Pick)
The offensive player dribbles around the ball screen and looks to score.
The screener, opens up to the ball, and cuts to the basket.(Roll)
It's important to be able to read the defense to make it easier for the offense find their weaknesses and to score.

To correctly use a pick and roll the screener must set the pick in the area, then roll
to the basket while looking for the ball. The player with the ball must read the
defense as they use the pick. If the screener gets double teamed then the player with the ball should shoot the jumper. If the player with the ball gets double teamed he
should use a bounce pass to the screener rolling to the basket. If the defenders switch, then the player with the ball must identify the mismatch and attack the basket/pass.

pick and roll is the best way to get to the basket and also have an extra man for the safety pass because it will throw the defense off. we (Virginia) use the curl the most to lose are man and come out for the shot or a drive to the basket. The fade is a great way to create space so you have time to read the defense. I think reading the defense is the most important part of basketball because if you read the defense you can find different ways to get to the basket or find a way to take and open shot or you can find a cutter to the basket

To correctly use a pick and roll, one offensive player must set a screen in an area so that the other offensive player can dribble around the screener while brushing shoulders so the defender runs into the screen. After, the player with the ball can shoot or drive or can pass to the screener who will then roll and open up towards the basket.
It is crucial to be able to read the defense because if you cannot read the defense, then you cannot successfully run offensive plays and score effectively. The defense will then lock down your offense and take control of the game.

Curl:a curl is when you when you go off of a pick and loop back around the picker and the defender.
Fade:a fade is when you jump back as you shoot, giving you space from the defender.

my team name is Oklahoma. To use a pick correctly, the person who is getting the screen has to drive their defender into the pick. The person setting the screen has to set on an area and not on a person so that the person with the ball can drive their defender into the pick. By setting a good screen, it allows a player to create space and drive to the basket. I think it is very important to read the defense because you need to be able to drive to the basket, and without reading the defense, you won't be successful in driving and making baskets. When you read the defense, you can decide what offensive play is best.

A pick and roll is used to set up a screen from the defender by having another player be the pick so that the player can do a roll, get open and make a shot.
A curl is when a player run around and going around the pick that teammate had set up, leaving the oick no space.
A fade is when you cut away from the player into open space in order to take a better shot.
It's very important to read the defense, beacause it allows players' to determine which way of creating space is the most effective move during the game.
To properly use a pick you have to set it on an area and not on the player, this way you don't get a penalty for a moving screen.
To use a curl you have to come off the screeners shoulder low and tight so you don't give he defender a chance to squeeze through the pick. This gives you a lot of space to shoot.
After you set the pick you want to roll because usually the defender follows the person who comes off the screen and leaves you open
It's important to read the defense because depending on what they do, you need to know what kind of move they need to use to help them create the most space

On a pick and roll, the screener must screen the area and stay still, then turn and cut hard to the basket, looking for a pass from the ball handler. The ball handler should go around the pick and look for the cutter. It is very important to read the read the defense because if you read it right, you will usually get open, but if you don't read it correctly you will probably not get open. Reading the defense results in lots of easy points.

Pick and Roll: Someone without the ball shall set a screen on an area for another person who wants to take an initial shot. When the screener screens he will then have to roll. This could potentially shift the focus of the defenders towards the roller which would give the person who wants to take the initial shot space to shoot. It's very important to read the defense so you could change the way you play offensive so you could go through the loop holes of their defense.

In order set a pic and role correctly your teammate must set his pic in an area, or space and let the ball carrier rub off his shoulder to create space from the the defender. After the pic is set and the ball carrier rubbed off your shoulder, open towards the in the direction the ball carrier went, and role to the basket. It is very important to be able to read defense's, because if your can you will be able to make the right passes, and score more against teams in game situations.

To successfully execute the pick and roll, the player setting the pick has to set the pick on an area not a person. Then, in order to create space between himself and the defender, the player with the ball dribbles around the outside shoulder of the screener. Once this is accomplished the screener roles to the basket for a possible pass and an opportunity to score.
It is very important to read the defense to decide who to pass to or when to shoot and to avoid any possible turnovers.
