In our 3 on 3 unit we have discussed several ways to create space on offense to get open. Please explain how to correctly use a pick and roll, a curl, or a fade to create space from the defender. How important do you think it is to be able to read the defense? Why

In order to correctly use a pick and roll, one player(usually guard) has to ask for a pick from another player(usually big man) so that the guard can tightly roll off of it and get an open lane/jump shot. The big man also has to roll into the paint after setting the screen to possibly get an open pass from the guard. Its important to be able to read the defense because based on how they react to the pick and roll the guard can decide whether to take the shot or pass it down low.

Pick and roll- set the pick for your player in space, and when their shoulder hits your, you roll to the basket and most likely will be open for a layup
Curl- to get open off of the player on your team the sets the screen for you. Essentially, you go around them.
Fade- when a player makes a cut or flash into open space by moving away from the basketball.
It is very important to be able to read the defense. This is because the defense is what allows you to make the different cuts and to set picks for your teammates.If you see them looking or going the other way, you should make a cut.
you have to set a pick in an area not a person. to do a correct roll you have to seal the defender so that they cant get the ball. it is important to read the defense because then you know what move to use and when and where to set the pick. kalise gilbert
A pick and roll is and offensive play to get a teammate open to score. It starts with a ball handler being guarded by a defender. The ball handler brings the defender to a teammate who sets a screen to separate the defender and ball handler. Then if the now separated defender chooses to block the ball handler, the person who set the screen can pivot to seal the defender and get open for a pass. If the defender chooses to block the screener, then the ball handler can either shoot or pass or drive in if open. Reading the defense is important because how the defense is set up will change how you attack. It is essential to a successful play.

1.)Pick and roll works like this one player comes next to the player with the ball or a player the team wants to free from a defender and you jam the defender's lane of movement in any direction then its up to the teammate to how he's going to use the pick
2.)Curl works like this : the player who has set a pick for his teammate spins of his dominant foot after the other teams defender has made contact with him and runs towards the basket or to a gap in the defense .
3.) its very important to be able to read the defense because if you can then you can identify gaps weak spots and patterns in the defense allowing you to if possible execute a play capitalizing on the defense's weakness

Pick and Roll :
A offensive player sets a screen for the player who has the basketball. The player with the ball will go the direction the screen is set to. Then the ball will be passed to the screener when they cut to the basket.
It creates space because the defense has to get over the obstacle (screen) and it takes time so it will "confuse" the defense and someone will probably be open.
Curl : Basically, you have to curl around the screen and it opens up space by leaving them behind.
Fade: You cut away from the player to create more space away from the player.
It is important to read the defense because you will know what they will do and it gives you different options to execute the play.
Read Defense -> More Options -> Better plays.
1. The first player sets a screen for his/her teammate with the ball, The player with the ball goes around the screen and looks to score, the person who made the screen gets open and score's. A curl is when the person wanting to take the shot runs through the paint then around the three point line and receives the ball from the teammate which is opposite of the person wanting to shoot.
2. It is important to be able to read the defense because if you know their game plan against you you can find the weaknesses in their plan and use it against them.
A pick and roll can be used to create space from the defender by having one player be the "pick" for his teammate who has the ball and then "rolls" behind the defender to get the pass.
A curl is used to create space by having a person on the offense run around the person setting the pick, grabbing their hip leaving no space between both of them, so the defender cannot get by. This gets them open to catch a pass and make a shot.
A fade is used to create space by having the person with the ball fade or step back from the defender to gain space to take a better shot. This leaves less chance of the defender being able to block the shot since the shooter is farther away.
It is very important to be able to read the defense because you can't know which offense move to use if you don't have an idea of where the defense will be. For example, it would be hard to use a fade if you have defenders crowding around you.

I think it is crucial that you can read the defense because if you can read the defense it will create better opportunities for you. For example if you curl off a screen when you were supposed to fade you would still have a defender on you. The way you know if you fade or curl is to read the defense. If you do the correct thing you will most likely have space.

Important enough to guard my opponent, so I would how to defense better.
Pick and Roll: Since the center is usually occupying the lane, he is the best person to set the pick. Approach the defender quickly, get right up against him, set yourself and brace yourself for the impact. Drive hard and fast laterally and brush up against your teammate so that there is no way the defender can go over the pick.
You have to read the defense to know that his only choice is to go under the pick (leaving you open) or switch (giving the big man an open lane).

For a pick and roll an offensive player sets a screen on the defender of the ball handler. Then they move towards the basket looking for the ball. Or, they can move out to create space and look for a jump shot. It's important to be able to read the defense so you know who would be the best person to pass to, or if you should take the ball yourself. When someone can't read the defense turnovers start to happen.

For the pick and roll an offensive player runs in the route of the defender of the player with the ball. They then plant their feet and wait for their team mate to blow by. The player with the ball either goes to the hoop or passes back to the person who set the pick.
reading the defense is essential to a successful offense, with this ability one can break defense and make easier and less contested baskets.

To do a proper pick and roll, you have to screen the area by the ball handler and once the defense follows, roll to the basket. It is important to be able to read the defense because if the defense is in zone coverage and you try to set a pick, it wont work because they will not follow the screen.

It is important to be able to read the defense because you have to be able to determine whether or not you should go up for a shot or pass the ball off to the roller.
To correctly use a pick and roll, you must set a pick in a space, then the picker rolls to the basket to get the ball into the hoop, once they receive a pass from the band handler. I think it's important to be able to read the defense, because you can understand where you can set a pick and who will get effected by it.

Its important to read the defense so you can choose the best play for the situation which could lead to your team scoring. If you make the wrong play, it could lead to a turnover.

For the pick and roll an off ball player sets a screen on the defender guarding his teammate. The player who the screen was set for runs past while his defender is caught on the screen. Once the defender has caught up to the guy, the person setting the screen rotates towards the basket to seal his defender outside and cuts towards the hoop. The defender is sealed so the person cutting should have a clear path to the hoop and an open shot if he gets the ball. It is important to read the defense so you know what to do withe the screen. If the defense jumps the screen you want to bump, and if the defender follows then you roll off of the screen while your defender is caught in the screen.

when you do a pick and roll, the person with the ball is being guarded by a defender. A teammate sets a pick so the teammate with the ball can roll off the screen and get to the hoop. This is important because it allows the ball handler to get a free path to the hoop.

to do a pick and roll correctly, a team mate sets a pick on the area around the person with the ball, and the person with the ball rolls tightly off the shoulder, towards the basket. its important to be able to read the defense so you can succesfully set picks and get open.

To set a pick and roll you should set a pic on an area so the teammate can drive the defender down and cm back off your shoulder . When he hits ur shoulder you drop that shoulder towards the hoop for a shot. You should be able to read the defense since if they aren't playing man coverage they won't follow the screen.
pick and roll- First, player 1 sets a pick for player 2. When player 1 hits player 2's shoulder, player 1 rolls to the basket where they should have an easy shot.

In order to properly use a pick and roll, a big man usually sets the pick for a guard. The big man then rolls into the paint for the pass and finishes at the rim.
A curl is when a player gets open off the play that set the screen for you.
Fade is when a player makes a cut or flashes into open space by moving away from the basketball.
It is very important to read the defense so that you can decide which play to utilize best. Pick and roll, fade, etc. When you read the defense you can see where they are weak and then exploit their weaknesses. Also, you can read the defense and based on the type of defense they are playing (zone or man) you can choose the optimal play to run.
