We are currently in our 5 on 5 unit and one of objectives we have been working on in class is determining how to properly execute a zone defense. The video below explains how to properly execute a 1-3-1 Zone defense. Please watch the video below and answer the following questions.
1. What is the job of the 3 and 4 in the 1-3-1 zone?
2. What is the 5's job in the 1-3-1 zone?
3. Do you think your 5 on 5 team could successfully run this zone defense? Why or why not?
4. If you had to run this defense please let me know which position you would put each of your teammates in and why?

1. They are each covering one half of the floor. They are constantly running back and forth. If the ball is on one half of the floor, the opposite wing (3 or 4) is always on the block. It is critical to have good athletes in 3 or 4 because they are always moving.
2. The 5 matches up with wherever their post player is and fronting according to instructions. Covering high-side or low-side completely or not at all.
3. I think my 5 on 5 team could attempt this 1-3-1 defense, but would have trouble executing ti properly do to the constant motion and coordination between all of the players. Even though my team has good players, I don't believe that this would be very successful and would probably cause a lot of confusion.
4. I would put the following players at each position:
1) Joe because he would be able to force the offensive player towards 3 well.
2) Tommy because his endurance and speed will help him effectively run the base line.
3) Will because his speed and tight defense will enable him to cover the offensive player and maybe result in a turnover.
4) Myself because I am able to keep up with covering the floor and am able to attack the offense.
5) Sam because his ability to adjust to the post player and follow instructions on the fly will allow him to be successful in this position.

1. The job of the 3 and 4 is to cover the area next to the paint on their side. They are constantly running from the half court line to the base line on their side.
2. The job of the 5 is to match up with their post player.
3. Yes, I think we could successfully run this zone defense because it is simple and it would help our team.
4. If we ran this defense, then joe would be 1 because he is the point guard, will would be 2 because he is good under the basket, michael would be 5 because he can steal the ball, tommy would be 3 because he is a good guard, and i would be 4 because im a guard.
1. The 3 and the 4 are covering the the paint in between the 1 and the 3
5. Their job is to protect the paint and not allow any layups
2. The 5 is down low protecting the basket.
3. No because some of our players don't know how to run the defense. Man to man is more a effective defense for our team.
4. Qwami would be 5, I would be 4, Nico would be 3, Sean would be 2, Grace 1.
Josh Dong
Andrew Troxell
1. The job of 3 and four are to cover the left and right of 1.
2. Th 5s job is to kinda help in the paint with 2 while he is posting up on a person. So if 2 has to go out and guard, 5 can drop back a little and help out.
3. I think my 5v5 team could run this because our teams strength is in our defence
4. Brent woudld be up top because he is the pointguard and has good man on defence, I would be below because i am tall and can get the rebounds. Bryn would be 3 because she is quick to get outside. 4 would be matt mays because he is also quick and good at defense and zach would be 5 because he is also a big man
1. The 3 and 4 cover the area around the paint on their side.
2. The 5 matches up against the opposing post player or protects the paint.
3. Man to Man defense is the best option for our team because we lack organization.
5. Andrew 5, me 4, Matt 3, Zach 2, Brent 1.
Joseph Villar
1) The job of 3 and 4 covers the area next to the paint on there side, they are always in constant motion.
2) 5's job is to match up with their post player.
3) Im sure if we attempted it we could do it, as all my teammates are capable.
4) 3-Donavan, 4-Garret, 5-Jack, 1-Issac, and 2-Alan
Kosta Skardis
1. The job of the 3 and 4 are to cover the 2 sides of the court by running up and down.
2. The 5's job is to cover the middle of the court and cover the big man of the opposite team.
3. No because I think some players would not be able to constantly run up and down the sides of the court, and would cause confusion.
4. I would put Isaac and Garrett at the 1 and 2 because they are fast, and they can push the ball towards the 3. I would put Donovan and myself at the 3 and 4 because we're athletic and can provide help defense by running up and down the sides. I would put Jack at the 5 because he's tall and skilled.
Allen Zhao
Sam Strasser
1. The 3 and 4 covers half of the court. they run from half court to the base line consistently.
2. the 5 matches up with their post player.
3. my 5 on 5 team would do the 1-3-1 defense and be very successful due to our tremendous/unfathomable amount of skill and chemistry.
4. Tjam1221 would be our 1 because he can push the ball well. Micheal would be our 2 because of his ridiculous speed and layup talent. Chris would be our three because of his defensive steal talents. Will would be a good 4 because of his dribbleing talent and i would be a 5 because of my ability to adjust to the ball position
1. The purpose of the 3 and 4 is to cover the paint so the offense can't score. The defense needs to be quick, constantly adjusting so the offense can't score.
2. The 5 needs to to match up with the opposing teams post player. He needs to be big and play tight defense.
3. Maybe, our team has a pretty good understanding of how to set up a zone defense. I believe we could adjust our defense accordingly. However, I'm not sure if we're disciplined enough to hold our position and to help each other out.
4. Joe would be 1 because he would make the offensive commit to one side where we would trap them. Chris would be 2 because he is quick and could attack the offensive. I would be 3 because of my defense and discipline. Tommy would be 4 because he covers the floor well. Michael would be 5 because he stays with the offensive and challenges them well.
Will Jones
Michael Chidueme
1. Cover their halves of the floor on each side, running back and forth. If the ball is on one half of the floor, the opposite wing, 3 or 4, is always on the block.
2. 5 matches up with wherever their post player is and fronting according to instruction. Covering highside or low side depending on the instructions.
3. Yes, my 5 on 5 team would be able to properly execute this because we have good athletes as well as players who follow instructions well.
4. Joe as a 1 because he would do a good job forcing the ball towards the 3 or 4.
Will as a 2 because his speed will help him cover the baseline well and his rebounding will help him get rebounds if they shoot.
Sam as a 3 because his tight defense will help him cover the offensive player and steal the ball.
Chris as a 4 because his endurance will help him run back and forth
and tommy as a 5 because he's good at following instructions and covering high and low side.
1. 3 and 4 cover the paint in the zone.
2. Protect the paint, block shots, not allow layups.
3. No because my teammates might get confused and therefore allow the offense to run past our defense and score easily.
4. i do not remember all my teammates names but i would out the tallest player at the 5. Me at the 1 because im quick, and everyone in between. This way the defense is more organized
Andrew Levine
1. The job of the 3 and 4 is to cover their part of the paint in their zone from mid court to the baseline.
2. The job of the 5 is to cover the post area to prevent the offense from scoring inside.
3. Yes because each member of our team covers their zone correctly, then we can prevent the other team from scoring.
4. Quami- 5, Josh- 4, Me- 3, Sean- 4, Grace-1
-Nicholas de Leon
Brent London
The job of the 3 and the 4 is to cover each half of the court vertically.
The job of the 5 is to cover the other team's post player, or anyone who goes into the paint.
I do think my 5 on 5 team could run this zone because we have just the right amount of athletes for each of the necessary positions. However, my team may not be conditioned enough to run the zone for a long period of time.
Bryn would play the 1 spot because of her speed and agility. Zach and Andrew would play the 3 and the 4 spots because of their conditioning, length, and athleticism, I would play the 2 spot because of my instincts and athleticism, and Joe would play the 5 spot because of his size and ability to guard the post/ paint area.
-Brent London
1. In a 1-3-1 setup, the 3 and 4 cover up each half of the floor by running back and forth constantly. When the ball is at one half, the other half is always on the block. They need to be good athletes because they are always moving.
2. In a 1-3- setup, the 5 matches up with the opposing teams post player, fronting according to the instructions covering the high side, low side or not at all.
3. My 5 on 5 team could successfully run this zone defense if we could get it quickly because most of our players are good athletes we don't have the greatest teamwork.
4.
1)Nabeel because he can defend well.
2)Me because i can run the base line well.
3)Josh because he is probably the player who moves around the most.
4)Nico because he is also moves around a lot.
5)Kwame because he is tall so the opposing teams post player will have trouble doing his thing.
Sean Liang

2. The 5 matches up with wherever their post player is
3. I think my team could attempt this defense, but would have trouble executing it because we have a hard time communicating well with each other.
4.
1) Max because he would be able to force the offense.

Naveenkumar Paranthaman
1. The two players need to cover each half of the floor. It's a lot of work, so the 3 and 4 have to be athletic.
2. The 5 matches up with the post player
3. Getting the 1-3-1 zone right takes a lot of practice, and my team doesn't have enough time to practice with each other. It probably wouldn't turn out very well.
4.
-1 would be me because it's very straightforward
-2 would be Joe, because he's good at blocking shots near the post
-3 would be Brent, because it's alot of running
-4 would be Zach, because he's also good at running and moving around
-5 would be Matt or Andrew, because they can defend post players well
-Bryn Fanger
1. The 3 and the 4 are covering their side of the floor, from the baseline to half court.
2. The 5 matches up wherever the offensive post player is and doesn't allow penetration to the basket.
3. I think my team would have trouble running this defense because it requires constant motion and communication.
4. If my team were to run this zone, I would have Sam up top at the 1 because he is speedy and scrappy. I would put me and Chris at the 3 and 4 because we could both shut down our sides respectively. Will would be at the 5 because he is good at guarding in the post, and lastly, Joe down low at the 2 because he is tall and can get the boards.
-Tommy Auchincloss
1. The 3 and 4 man in a 1-3-1 zone are to cover part of the paint and the area around it. they are constantly switching their position on the court based on where the ball is.
2. The 5 guys job is to match up with the player in the post and not allow him to score.
3. I think that if we practiced this defense a little bit that it could work with our team because we have some fast player and other players that are big to cover the post.
4. If my team ran this defense then
1) would be max because he is fast and has a lot of endurance.
2)kylie because she can see which side the pass is going to be on and already be there,
3) me because I can run and switch immediately into a defensive stance at any time and I can match feet with the person that I am guarding.
4) Andrew because he can cover basically anyone no matter their size or speed.
5) Navine because he is tall and can get rebounds and block the player in the post shot.

i would be the 5 since i can gaurd in the post
jack wallerstedt
1. The 3 and the 4 defend their side of the court by constantly running back and fourth. They use athleticism and active hands to deflect passes.
2. The just guards the player who is posting up and defend as instructed.
3.Although my team is quite a capable team, we are not the most athletic team in the world. It would be difficult to execute the 1-3-1 zone defense effectively because of the constant necessary movement on defense.
4.
Kylie/David at the 1. Although both players are not the greatest of athletes, both of them are able to create havoc on the defensive end at the top of the key
Hunter at the 2. Hunter is able to move very well on defense and recovers quickly to guard the basket.
Andrew at the 3. Andrew is very athletic and moves very well.
Me at the 4. I am also a little athletic, and I am able to move well.
Naveen at the 5. Naveen is a tall player that can prevent the offensive player in the post from scoring.
1. 3 and 4 is supposed to cover the area next to the paint. They run from the half court line to the base line on their side.
2. The 5 matches up with wherever their post player is and fronting according to instructions. Covering high-side or low-side completely or not at all.

matt mays
Kwame Frimpong
1. They cover one half of the half court set. Move to the ball and contest jump shooters in their zone
2. High low. but makes sure no one gets behind him. protect the house
3. NO, because they lack height, and knowlegde of how to play a good zone. to be an effective zone team like syracuse, a team needs length.
4. Man, because we strap up!!
Nabil Abdulladir
1. They cover the wings and contest the jump shots
2. He covers the baseline mainly base and corners.
3. Yes because everyone on our team is very athletic and smart enough to run the defens.
4. Id put kwame at 4 because he is the best player on the team. Myself and nico switching at 2 because of our shot and defense. Josh and sean at 1 switching of because of there ability to move the ball. Egor at 5 because of his rebounding ability and his defensive ability. Lastly Grace at 3 because of her all around skill and ability.
