Period 7- Basketball

Due Date: Wednesday, February 27th


Basketball history and rules quiz. Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Each question is worth 2 points.

1. Who invented the game of basketball and where was it invented?

2. In high school basketball, how long may a defensive player stand in the paint without guarding anyone?

3. How many total players are on the basketball court at one time during a high school regulation game?

4. What position does a smart offensive player always get in when they catch the ball?

5. Name and explain 2 moves that we worked on in class to attack the basket and get past the defense. When would you use this move?

1. James Naismith invented basketball while teaching phys ed at McGill University in Canada.

5. The jab step can be used in order to trick the defender and send him or her in the wrong direction, getting you space. Another move is the fake pass. Once again, you will send the defender in the wrong direction, giving you just enough time to dribble away or shoot a basket.

4. They get into the triple threat.
5. First, you could drive into the lane and pull up, you would use this move if you have a good jumper and it is clogged up under the basket. Second, you can just pull up from the triple threat position. You can use this if your defender is playing off you.

Basketball was invented by James Naismith who was a PE teacher in Canada.

Triple threat position.

5. Name and explain 2 moves that we worked on in class to attack the basket and get past the defense. When would you use this move?

The Jab step shot- Used when a player is guarding you to closely, take a small jab step to fake the defender, pull back you leg and shoot.

The jab step crossover- Jab one way, crossover the ball below your knees and drive the other way. Also used when you are being guarded tightly.

2. No defensive player can have both feet in the paint without guarding someone for more than 3 seconds consecutively.
3.10 players, 5 on each team
4.Triple threat position
5.In the strong side drive, the player jab steps to catch the defense off guard and the takes a big low step to drive up to the basket and make a lay up. In the jab jump shot, the player takes a small jab step and quickly goes into a jump shot. The strong side drive is used when there is not a lot of defense backing up the defensive opponent and there is a clear path if the player passes the opponent. The jab jump shot is used when the defense backs away from the jab and gives you space to quickly shoot.

2. In high school the time is unlimited however in NBA they cant stay longer than 3 sec. when not guarding a player.
3.A total of 10 players, 5 from each team.
4.It is best to catch it in a triple threat position.
5. One move is a jab step strong side drive and another is a crossover. You would use the moves when a player is playing tight defense on you.

5. The strong side drive. You could use this at anytime in order to get to the basket. The cross-over. This move is used to break man to man defense if some one is playing you tight.

4) The player gets into triple threat position
5) Jab step and drive-the player takes a step and then drives to the basket in the other direction. This move is used when you are close to the defender.
Triple threat- the player lowers his shoulder to get pass the defense. It is used when the defense is in a higher position.

5. The jab step where your feet moves forward a couple of inches to see how the defender reacts. I would use it when I'm in triple threat.
Crossover where you switch your dribbling hand and dribble the ball from one side to the other. I would use this move when I'm driving to the basket and shaking off the defender.

5) step back shot is when you are in tripple threat and jab step and take a dribble then step back and shoot. You would use step back shot when the defense is playing you tight. Another move is strong side drive which is when you are in tripple threat, do a punp fake, then jab step and drive to the basket for a layup. You would use strong side drive whem the defense is tight on you and there is an open lane where you can drive

5. One move I used was the jabstep cross over and jabstep pumofake. You would use this move when your on offense trying to get past the defensive player.

5. Shot fake then shot which is used to fake the defender into thinking your shooting then actually shooting to get them off balance, and cross over to switch and make the defensive think more in order to drive to the basket
