Period 6- Basketball

Due Date: Wednesday, October 21st

Basketball history and rules quiz. Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Each question is worth 2 points.  Please don't forget to put your name on the Blog so you receive credit.
1. Who invented the game of basketball and where was it invented?

2. In high school basketball, how long may a defensive player stand in the paint without guarding anyone?

3. How many total players are on the basketball court at one time during a high school regulation game?

4. What position does a smart offensive player always get in when they catch the ball?

5. Name and explain 2 moves that we worked on in class to attack the basket and get past the defense. When would you use this move?

5. Triple Threat jab step the drive to the basket and triple threat mini jab and then shoot the jump shot. You use the first move when your player is close to you and knows you can shoot. You use the second one when your defender is farther from you and gives you space to shoot.

5. one of them is to cross the paint, fake high, and drop step into the paint with a power dribble => forces way past opponents for a shot (don't remember name)

spin move => gets past the side of the defense while they adjust to the new direction; cause the defender slight confusion.

1. Basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than football.
2.In high school basketball, a player may stand in the paint for no more than 3 seconds when not guarding anyone.
3. 10 total players are allowed on the court at a time during a high school regulation game
4. A smart offensive player gets in the triple threat position when they catch the ball.
5. One move we learned in class was the strong side drive. You could use this at anytime in order to drive to the hoop. Another move we learned in class was the cross-over. This move would be used to escape a tight defender and drive to the hoop.

a. Jab step pull up shot will be used, if the defense is playing moderately (not too tight, not too loose). You can use a jab step to create the space, and then pull up before the defender has a chance to recover.
b. You can use a pump fake, and drive to the basket, if the defender is playing tight defense. You can pump fake to get the defender to jump, and then use the open lane to take it to the basket.

Jab step you can use when you catch the ball in triple threat postion you can use this move to seal defenders foot and to misdirect them another move you can use is a post drop step in which you catch the ball in the post shimmy to opposite side pivot towards the hoop and take a power dribble to score.

2.High school defensive players can only stay in the paint for 3 seconds.

4.A smart offensive player gets in a triple threat stance.
5.Two moves we worked on in class is the drop-step to the paint and escape dribble. Drop-step is used when you have a defender in the paint and you want to get to the basket. The escape dribble is used when you have a defender on you and is too close for you to shoot.
