Period 3 General PE

Due Date: Monday, December 15th

Badminton Rules and Regulations

A badminton match is played to the best of three games.

Rock-Paper-Scissors determines first serve or choice of side.

The object of a badminton game is to hit the badminton shuttlecock over the badminton net and onto the ground within bounds on your opponent's side of the court.

A rally can also be lost by hitting the shuttle into the badminton net, out of bounds, before it crosses the net to your side, or if it strikes your clothing or body rather than your badminton racket.

Badminton Scoring Formats

In class we will utilize rally play; 21 points are needed to win a badminton game.

In rally play, a point can be awarded to either team, and in most cases, a point is awarded along with resumption of service, except when a rally point is lost by the first member of a serving doubles team.

At the conclusion of each badminton game, players or teams must switch sides.

If a third game is necessary during a match, sides are switched during that game when a player/team has reached eight points in doubles or men's singles, six points in women's singles, or 11 points in rally play.

Badminton Serving Rules

As in tennis, badminton service is always done diagonally, e.g. from the right service court to the opponent's left service court.

The first serve is always taken from the right court, and subsequent serves are taken from alternating sides.

Line shots in badminton service or rallies are considered in, though court bounds are different for singles and doubles play.

The back line is the same for both, but singles badminton is played with the narrower of the two sidelines.

For your blog for this week. Tell me two things you learned about badminton that you did not know before reading this blog.

Before I read this blog, I did not know that a badminton game went to 21 points. I also learned from this blog that rock-paper-scissors decides who serves first or who chooses which side they want.

I learned that badminton service is done diagonally like tennis, and that rock paper scissors is used to determine first serve or choice of side.

I learned from this post that a badminton match was played to the best of three games. I also learned from this post that the object of badminton is to hit the birdie over the net and onto the territory within bounds on the opponents side of the court.

1. I did not know that rock paper scissors determines the choice of side or the first serve.
2. I did not know that a rally can be lost when the shuttle strikes your clothes or body, rather than the racket.

Dear Ms. Dyer,
I knew that to win a game, you had to score 21 points. Also, the first serve is served from the right side.

Before reading the blog, I did not know about badmitton that:

1. That a badmitton match is played as the best of 3 games and each game being to 21 points.

2. That you had to serve the shuttlecock diagonally onto the opposite side of the court.

2 things I know about badmiton is that you cant double hit with your partner you just have to hit the birdy one time over the net.and the birdy could be very hard to hit

Two things that I did not know was:
Rock-Paper-Scissors determines first serve or choice of side.

A rally can be lost if it strikes your clothing or body rather than your badminton racket.

Matthew Caramanico i learned that you have to serve across court for it to be a legal serve and i also learned that you deside who serves by doing rock, papper, sissors shoot.

1. The Rock-Scissors-Paper way of determining first service is wrong. The right way to determine first service is to toss the birdie and whoever the bird points to serves first.
2. It is legal to serve backhand but it is illegal to serve above the waist.
P.S.: i already know this stuff

I learned that determining who gets to serve first is by the simple game of rock paper scissors. Also I learned that you have to start serving form the right and diagonally.

After reading the rules and regulations of badminton, i learned that a rally can be lost if the ball strikes your clothing or body rather than the racket. Also, i learned that the frist serve of a rally is always on right side of the court with subsequent serves from alternating sides.

- I didn't know you had to switch sides after 11 points in the third game.
- I didn't know that line shots were considered "in".

1) I did not know the "ball" was called a "shuttlecock."

2) I did not know that in a third match the side switches mid-game every couple of points varying on the type of game.

Katie Perroots:
Before I read the blog, I didn't know that for men's singles in the third game, the teams switch sides at 8 points and for women singles, they switch at 6 points. Also, I didn't know that in a rally play, the point can go to either team and usually the service goes to the same team.

I did not know that during the third game of a set teams switch sides after a certain amount of points. Also, I learned that service is decided by rock-paper-scissors.

1) To decide who serves first, the teams must play rock paper scissors.

2) A match consists of 3 games

Before reading this blog, i didn't know that i can't hit it before it crosses to my side ( i reached over the net to hit it a few times and it counted as my point). I didn't know that first serve has to be on the right side.

Max Katz stated simply:

I had thought that I knew a lot about badminton but obviously I was incorrect. I did not know that the ancient game of Rock-Paper-Scissors is used to determine the choice of either side or serve. Also, I didn't know that singles badminton is played on a narrower court. Thank you for this newly aquired knowledge!

I didn't know that a rock-paper-scissors game determined who serves first and I didn't know you had to serve from the yellow line.

One thing i learned from this blog is that rock-paper-scissors can determine which side a team is on and which team serves first. I also learned that you must serve diagonally across the court.

Max Goldschein:

1) You serve across the net diagonally.

2) You decide who goes first by rock paper scissors.
(Even though XiYang contridicts that)

p.s Xiyang is amazing at Badminton. I would like to know how he got so good.

pps. Max Katz isn't amazing at Badminton unlike every other sport that no one has heard of. XiYang would show him up any day.

1. I did not know that you could either choose the side or wether you hit first. I always thought it was just to decide who serves first.

2. I also didn't know that singles have a narrower field. I thought it was just the same making it harder.
