Period 7 Basketball

Due Date:  Wednesday, April 24th

The college basketball season just concluded, and one story making headlines is about the Rutgers head coach Mike Rice and his coaching style.  Watch the video below and then answer the folling questions.

1.  Initially, Mike Rice was suspended for 3 games for this behavior.  Do you think that was a fair consequence? Why or why not?

2.  Do you think the entire coaching staff and athletic director should be fired based on the video you just saw? Why or why not?

3.  Some people are saying the only reason Mike Rice was fired was because the footage of him in practice was leaked to the media.  Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

1. I believe being suspended for three games is a fair consequence. Loud mouth coaches like these make watching and playing sports a lot less fun. Rice needed to be taught a lesson and cool his anger.

2. I don't think anyone except for Rice should be punished for this video. He was the only one abusing the other players, nobody else was involved in it.

3. I don't agree that Rice was fired only because the video was leaked to the media. If the video was shown only to the school officials, I think Rice would have been fired anyway.

Yes, he was abusing his players.

2. Do you think the entire coaching staff and athletic director should be fired based on the video you just saw? Why or why not?

No, even thought the coaching staff did not stop Rice, they did not do it.

3. Some people are saying the only reason Mike Rice was fired was because the footage of him in practice was leaked to the media. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

Yes, the only reason why Rice was fired was to keep the basketball programs reputation from dropping.

1 I believe being suspended for three games was not enough. Rice should have been fired sooner.
2.I dont think anyone else should have been fired by the should have been punished in some way for allowing the behavior.
3.I agree that RIce was fired because of the video. If only the school officials saw it they would have been very discreet with their punishment. If the public had not seen the behavior or reacted the punishment would have been much less severe.

1. I believe that the punishment of a three game suspension was not severe enough. I believe he should of been fired immediately. Coaching like this is detrimental to the team as well as the morale of the players, and makes the game a lot less fun for everybody.

2. I believe that the Athletic Director and Rice should be the only ones fired because of the video. Rice's assistant coaches, such as Eric Murdoch, tried to bring Rice's behavior to the attention of Tim Pernetti, the Rutgers AD, but Pernetti turned a blind eye to the whole scandal.

3. I agree with this statement. There is a lot going on behind the scenes in the sports world, especially the college sports world, where this behavior is tolerated.

1. Yes i think it is a fair consequence because no coaches should be throwing basketballs and physically hit the players and cus at them and call them slurs.

2.I think just the head coach should be fired for doing what hes doing no other people were doing anything in the video.

3.yes, media plays a big role in everyday life and this shows his cruelty i dont believe rice would have been fired if it wasnt leaked.

1. I believe its a fair consequence because constantly badmouthing coach ruins the game. Plus, he abuses the players time and time again.

2.I think only Rice deserved to be fired, but some of the staff should've gotten punished for not firing him any sooner.

3. I don't believe the only reason he was fired was due to the video. He would've gotten fired even if only a select few saw the tape, and eventually some of the players would report the abuse.

1) yes because this makes people stop buying tickets to watch basketball.
2) no because it was just Rice who was doing this to the playes.
3)yes because everybody uses the media and it shows how he behaves with his team.

1. it is fair because he abused his players and he has an anger problem, he should actually have a bigger punishment.

2. no because they were not the ones abusing the players so they should be the only ones to keep their job

3 Yes because the video is proof that he probably does these things to his players all the time

1.Yes, It was like a warning.

2.No, I do not think the entire staff should be fired it was one man responsible.

3.Yes, I agree with this statement because it had been going on for years and nothing happened.

1. No, I believe that a three-game suspension was not good enough, because a coach who is physically abusing his players should be fired right away.

2. I think that only Rice and the Athletic Director should be the ones fired. Rice's assistant coaches, including Eric Murdoch, should not be punished for the scandal, because he tried to stop it himself in the first place.

3. I agree with the statement, because the media plays a big role, and after seeing what Rice did, Rutgers knew that they needed to fire him.

1. Yes it gives him time to get his act together and think about what he did.

2. No they shouldnt have to suffer for what he did

3. Yes because the public is aware of what he did and firing him is justice everybody wants.

1. I think it is a fair consequence because he has no rights to physically hit the players or trash talk to them. As a coach, or any person, it isn't the right way to solve problems.

2. I don't think the staff and director should be fired. They didn't do anything to hurt the players; however, they should have some consequences for just standing by.

3. I agree. If the footage wasn't released or caught, nobody would know what's happening to the team, thus removes the reason why he got fired.

1. Do I think it was a fair consequence? No Ms. Dyer I dont think it was a fair consequence. It was a very atrocious and dispicable action by the coach that left me appauled in his actions.

2. Yes, I think the entire coaching staff shou;d be fire cause the coaches actions werent right and just suspensiion is not enough and there just as dumb as he is.

3. Yes, I agree with this statement. The video shows proof of what he was doing.

1. Yes because he was physically and verbally abusing his players

2. No, even though they did not do anything to stop him they should not be punished for what Rice did

3. Yes because it would not have gained as much attention if not leaked

1. I think the 3 game ban was fair because it gave him the chance to change.
2. I do not think the entire staff should have been fired because one man's actions should not hurt an entire team of coaches.
3.I think had the video not been leaked he still would have been fired, just at a later date. I think the video just made it happen faster.

1) I think it is a fair consequence because his style of coaching caused many problems
2)Even though the coaching staff and athletic director are responsible for this, I believe it is not serious enough to fire them all
3) I agree with this statement because most people's opinion had made a strong support for firing Rice

1) Yes, he was verbally and physically abusing his players and should be punished for it.

2) No, they were not the ones who committed the abuse, and even though they didn't take extreme measures to try to stop Rice, they should not be fired.

3) Not completely because chances are he would have been fired anyway by his superiors if they saw the footage.

1. I think it was a fair consequence because Rice was abusing his players and not treating them well
2. No the entire coaching staff should not be fired only Rice because Rice took actions and none of the others took the actions or joined in a Rice abused them all himself
3. No I don't agree. If anyone saw this including the parents of the players I'm sure they would not like it and fire reports on Rice and get him fired.

1. I believe he should have been fired sooner because that is no way to treat players at any level of the game.

2. No just the head coach because the asssistants had no part in it.

3. yes, the footage provided evidance for players claims.

1) i think he should have been suspended for much longer than that or should have been fired right away
2) if they were aware of what was happening then yes they should have been punished
3) yes i think this is why he was fired because it brought to light what was going on in the program

1.I think it was a fair consequence that Rice was suspended because he was putting his hands on his players and abusing them.
2.I dont think the entire coaching staff should be fired because of Rice. Rice had all the blame for what he did and it's not like they were apart of it.
3. No because Im sure if anyone else had seen what he did before they would of tried to get him fired as well.

1.I think that he should have been suspended for a longer amount of time then just three games for being that rude.
2. Nobody but rice is to blame because he was abusing the palyers
3.I think it is right that he was fired and he deserved it because no caoch has the right to do what he did to those players.

1. No, he should have been fired then.
2. Yes, because they did not do anything to fix the problem
3. Yes, because the players would most likely have just transferred if they did not like him, and he would not have been under so much scrutiny.
