Period 2 - Team Games

Due Date: Wednesday, April 29th
We will begin football this week and I want to start getting you thinking about key concepts and positions associated with football.

Please take a moment and define the following terms.  Please remember to put your name on your blog.

    Line of Scrimmage - An imaginary line crossing the field which both the offense and defense can't cross until the ball is snapped

    Defensive Back - Defensive players who take their position somewhat back from the line of scrimmage

    Blitz - When additional players are sent to sack or rush the quarterback

    Interception - When the defensive team catches the offense's pass and receive possession of the ball

    Cover 1 - A man to man coverage for all the defensive backs except for one player who is not assigned a man to cover but rather plays deep to react to the play

    Cover 3 - Two corners and free safety each have responsibility for a deep third of the field, while the strong safety plays like a linebacker. Prevents big pass plays and stops the run while giving up short passes

    Wide Receiver - Among the fastest players on the field who catch the ball on passing plays

    Quarterback - The player who runs the offense, including passing and handing off the ball

    Fumble - When the offense drops the ball and the defense recovers it

    Safety - When the ball is downed in your own end-zone. It is 2 points for the other team

    Defensive Back-Player on the defnesive side that covers the middle of the field
    Intercetion-When a defensive player catches a ball thrown by the quaterback and gives possesion to the defense
    Cover 1-Man to man defense with one player covering the center of the field
    Cover 3-Man to man defense with three defenders cover a third of the deep field
    Wide Receiver-Offensive player who runs routes down field to try and catch the ball
    Quarterback-Main position on offensive who calls the plays and throws the football
    Fumble-When an offensive player loses possesion of the football by dropping it
    Safety-A 2 point play when the defensive pushes the offense and downs them in the endzone

    1.) Line of Scrimmage is the imaginary line that both teams cannot cross until the ball is put into play
    2.) Defensive players positioned a bit behind the line of scrimmage
    3.) Additional players from the defensive team rush the quarterback
    4.) All defensive backs do man-to-man coverage except for one, who is positioned deeper just in case
    5.) 3 defensive backs responsible for the final 3rd while strong safety acts like a linebacker.
    6.) Runs and catches the ball
    7.) Distributes the ball, whether a throw or a handoff
    8.) Loss of possession before being tackled or scoring
    9.) A type of scoring that can happen when the ball carrier is downed in his own end zone.

    Line of Scrimmage-An imaginary line separating the teams at the beginning of a play in the game of football

    Defensive Back-The players on the defensive team who take a position back from the line of scrimmage; they are distinguished as the linebackers.

    Blitz-When additional players attack, or rush, the passer during the game. Their goal is to tackle the quarterback or disrupt their throw. It comes from the word Blitzkreig

    Interception- An act of a defensive player catching a forward pass by the offensive team

    Cover 1- A first-day install scheme where defenders play man to man coverage defense from an outside leverage position and use the free safety help in the middle of the field

    Cover 3- A scheme that shows up often in early down-and-distance situations to create an eight-man front, Cover 3 is a first-day-install defense

    Wide Reciever- An offensive player who is positioned far from the end and is used usually as a pass reciever

    Quarterback- A player who is positioned behind the center who directs a team's offensive plays

    Fumble- Dropping or losing control of the ball, sometimes causing a turnover, or change of possession

    Safety-A defensive back who normally is positioned well behind the line of scrimmage

    Line of Scrimmage: a line of scrimmage is an imaginary transverse line (across the width of the football field) beyond which a team cannot cross until the next play has begun.
    Defensive Back: the players on the defensive team who take positions somewhat back from the line of scrimmage.
    Blitz: when additional players are sent to rush the quarterback.
    Interception: an interception occurs when a forward pass is caught by a player of the opposing team
    Cover 1: Cover 1 schemes employ only one deep defender, usually a safety.
    Cover 3: Cover 3 refers to 3 deep defenders each guarding one-third of the deep zone.
    Wide receiver: a position in American and Canadian football that functions as the pass-catching specialist.
    Quarterback: a player positioned behind the center who directs a team's offensive play.
    Fumble: occurs when a player who has possession and control of the ball loses it before being downed (tackled) or scoring.
    Safety: (play) a scoring play which results in two points being awarded to the scoring team. (Position) defensive backs who line up from ten to fifteen yards behind the line of scrimmage.

    Wide Receiver- The key player in passing plays the receives the pass, usually the fastest player on the team

    Quarterback- The player who controls the offense and passes the ball

    Fumble- When the offense drops the ball while in possession and the defense picks it up and gains possession

    Safety- When the offense loses possession in their own end-zone, this rewards the defense with two points.

    Fumble - When the offense drops the ball

    Safety - When a player is tackled in thier own end-zone. It is two points for the other team and the other teams possesion
